Leonardo Da Vinci

Alaynah Raymond

Leonardo da Vinci was born April 15, 1452 in Florence Italy. He was a sculptor, painter, architect, military engineer, draftsman and inventor. Leonardo was an artist at the time when humanism was rising to the surface. Leonardo painted moods and feelings with such ease. You can look at his works and hear or sense the words or thoughts the characters are expressing.

Leonardo painted the “The Last Supper”,when he was 41. Itis a fresco like painting on the wall of, a convent, “Santa Maria Delle Grazie”. It stretches nearly fifteen feet by twenty-nine feet on the same wall today. This is rather large for such an amazingly detailed image. “The Last Supper” shows what the last meal with Jesus was like. It shows Jesus and the twelve disciples eating before he is delivered over to be crucified. The room has incredible perspective. The room looks as if it was going into the wall it is painted on.

Looking at “The Last Supper”there is a lot of movement. The disciples are talking with Jesus. The sound of their chatter bounces of the painting. The image of Judus, is based off a man that Leonardo went looking for in a jail. He found a criminal who would describe Judus at a single glance.

“The Last Supper” has sadly been hard to keep intact. The paint is fading and chipping.  Bombs, from World War II, have been part of this decaying process. The paint has been touched up many times by new artists. This was last done in 1999.

Many artists have tried to give their own take on this painting. One particular person, Vik Muniz, tried to paint“the last supper”with chocolate syrup.

Leonardo painted The “Mona Lisa” when he was 51. It is a made with oil paint on poplar wood.  It depicts a woman with long brown hair wearing a dark green dress. The forestry background behind her, was painted with such accuracy and realism. The most fascinating detail, in this painting, is her smile. Lisa looks to the right of the viewer, with such a solemn expression. As you look closely, you can see her lips are turned upwards in a small smile. It seems as though she is thinking of a secret joke or about something that makes her happy. Her eyes are bright and cheerful.

The “Mona Lisa” was painted at the same time as Michelangelo finished his, 17-foot-tall, sculptor of David. This painting is one of the world’s most famous paintings.

Around the time this painting was finished, the Reformation was started by Martin Luther. This particular painting of Leonardo’s is a great example of what was happening in the culture back then in art. At this time, art was growing to be more and more focused on humans and not spiritual things that used to capture all art.

In contrast, both paintings are of people. Both are very realistic. The hair in both the “Mona Lisa”and “TheLast Supper “have so much detail. The clothes folds are so realistic when they fall around the individual. The “Mona Lisa”is quiet, thoughtful, and still. You see and hear thoughts. Whereas, “The last supper”has this since of chatter, and bustle. After 600 years of being displayed many people still are going to see them. We are still learning from them and using Leonardo’s techniques.

Michelangelo

PietaDavidAlaynah Raymond

Michelangelo was born march 6, 1475, in Caprese Italy. He was an architect, engineer, poet, artist, and sculptor. Although Michelangelo is looked at now as one of the best artist, he was not always looked at like this.

Michelangelo grew up into a family of bankers. When he was 13 he apprenticed the painter Domenico Ghirlandaio for three years. He then went on to learn how to sculpt under the teaching of the Giovanni who was a Medici friend. He did not always follow this teacher’s methods, but used some of his own.

Michelangelo got a job to replace sculptor who had passed away, in Bologna. He was to complete the project the sculptor did not get to finish, many figures for a tomb.

When Michelangelo was 47 he stared painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. (1508-1512) He was a perfectionist who go extremely angry, when he made the smallest mistake. He fired all of his hired hands because he thought them inapt to do such a job. He painted it by himself, lying on his back.  The Sistine chapel is covered in detail.

One of his most famous sculptors Michelangelo made is the sculptor named, “Pieta”. He made it when he was only 25. Michelangelo sculpted with one slab of stone, saying that he was, “liberating the figure from the marble that imprisons it.”  This sculptor was so incredibly good people did not believe Michelangelo had made it. Thus the people thought Michelangelo was a liar.

When the people started giving credit to another artist for the work “Pieta”, Michelangelo carved his name onto the sash across Mary’s chest. He later regretted this act, and decided never to sign another piece of art again.

Another amazing sculptor that was produced by Michelangelo was “David” a nearly 17foot tall sculptor of the great king in the Bible. “David“was made from one slab of solid Carrara marble. One of the whitest marbles in the world.  The back of David’s leg, and around his shoulder, were originally overlaid with gold. After a while of it being outside, in the Plaza Della Signoria, the gold was washed away. This sculptor was made between 1501-1504. This is the same time that Leonardo was painting the “Mona Lisa”.  This was the time when people started to look to humans rather than God as their saviors. We see this throughout all art produced during the Renaissance. Although this sculptor is of a man from the bible, we see that the glory is not given to God through this piece. In earlier paintings and sculptors, the characters were giving signs of blessing or signs of pleas for mercy, all to or from God. This was a major change in the culture of Europe.

Michelangelo painted and sculpted real looking people, yet they were often not realistically sized. We see this when we look at the piece, “Pieta “and the piece “David”. Mary is not proportioned well to Jesus. She is rather large.  David is nearly 17 feet tall, this is not a common height for a real man.

Michelangelo thought it important to sculpt out of one slab of stone, which he did in both of these sculptors. Michelangelo signed his sculptor “Pieta” whereas, he did not sign his sculptor “David”. The sculptor of “Pieta ”is only around 6 feet tall,

Teachers Should Be Paid More

This is a persuasive essay that I wrote for my writing class. I am very burdened by this topic and thought it a good one to write about. I hope you enjoy it!

Mr. Donnelly

Teachers work around the clock. You see them in the classroom and then they go home to grade papers. They are expected to keep in contact with parents, plan lessons, communicate with administration, and attend conferences…

Teacher have a class that is a group of 20-25 children. The day goes like this, the teacher arrives, greets the students and the parents. The children loved to talk to their teacher about their weekend, and the teacher is interactive with their stories. The teacher then tries to quiet the class down so she can start teaching them. This is a very long process as the children can be rowdy and excited to be with their friends. Children love to act out their stories, and they talk loudly. Teachers are masters at quieting the class, so she pulls out the yoga mats she bought, and sits each child on one. Now, with them situated she begins a yoga class, that she is not paid for. This settles them down nicely.  She then puts them at their desk, and the lesson begins. At the end of the day, she encourages each child with a little treat perhaps, like a lollipop ( which she also purchased.)

Teachers are public figures so they have to be a moral person, who is an example for children to look up too. This is a social burden for them, because each child and their parent’s expectations are different. Teachers are burdened, even at the grocery store, to cover up certain things they buy in case they should run into a teacher or student. I interviewed a teacher I know, and discovered that this is so pressuring. Brittany said that she feels obligated to cover up bear she purchases for her husband for game day. Teachers are expected to be fully committed to influencing children, and this follows them every wear.

Also teachers have newer and harder subjects then 50 years ago. Yet their pay has actually gone down. Only adding to the difficulty, teachers are expected to help disagreements between children, and sometimes counsel parents and children. They teach patience, love, empathy, and helpfulness too.

Teachers are not given enough classroom money. With their teaching money they go to garage sales, used book stores, and other used places to find good educational books, to keep their children quiet. I have seen this happen and have overheard them trying to get deals on those cheap books, because that money comes out of their own pocket. My own aunt is a teacher, and said there was no money in the school budget to repaint the peeling walls of her classroom. So she went and bought $250 worth of paint and had my papa go help her paint it. She had to buy the paint, move the furniture, and repaint it, with only the help of an old man. Because she has no free time during the week, she did all of this ON A WEEKEND.

After all of this work that they do, the overworked elementary teacher only gets paid $36,000 a year. After groceries, house payments, clothes, and car money, you can see how this does not spread very far. Because of this The rate of male teachers has dropped almost 40%. How many male teachers do you know? How many male teachers do you know who have pursued a different career, for something else that can make more money? I know five, and all quit because the salary is not enough to provide for their family. So female teachers have taken the job.

Where is all the school money going? A large portion goes to recreation, such as basketball, field trips, soccer, baseball, and etc.… I want to expound on a couple of “expenses” that the government seems to find necessary.

Summer school: Summer School is paid for by the government for children who fail or are behind. Why don’t the parents have to pay for their child who didn’t pass their class? Why not have the kids who cannot afford summer school stay in that grade for another year?

Janitors: In Japan children clean their building, and not a paid janitor, because it is an act of appreciation for all those who serve them. I think this is a great idea for us to imply to Americas school system. I like the quote from Mr. Trump:

“We’re 26th in the world. 25 countries are better than us at education. And some of them are like third world countries. But we’re becoming a third world country.”- President Donald Trump

How do we fix this? Recreation is an addition to school, they should be paid in full by the parents of the children who enter into the activity. The taxes would stay the same and the money that was used for recreation would be given to the teachers, raising their salaries.

I believe that parents should be responsible for raising the salary of all hardworking teachers. Teachers are taking the place of mothers, so pay them for raising your children, or teachers will become extremely hard to find, and our next generation will become unintelligent. An uneducated future has the fall of America in its lap.

10 April 2017

Bob and Joe where sitting on their beds thinking of how to get snacks for their party that night. The twins where not very intelligent which got them into a lot of trouble. The problem was that they had told everyone that there would be delicious food at their party tonight, but somehow they still had no money to buy them, and they had told everyone that this was going to be an epic party. Whats an epic party without snacks?

Bob looked at Joe, “I’ve got it!” Joe looked up from his blank piece of paper that should have had ideas on it. “What?” Joe said reluctantly. “We will rob a gas station!” A smile slowly appeared on Joe’s face and his eyes sparkled with mischief. Bob and Joe combined a plan that was very illogical.  Which involved breaking into the store in broad daylight. “I knew we had more potential than just buying goodies!” said Joe in his husky voice that meant he was up to no good,

The boys where now in the bathroom putting black paint under their eyes, and dressing in all black. Their mom, Sydney, knocked on the door, “Boys, don’t you think that you should clean up a bit so that you aren’t embarrassed when your friends come over and see your toy trucks all over the house?” The Boys looked at each other in udder silence they could almost hear the black paint dripping off of the paint brush, “Ummm…. We are actually going out now to ughh…go to our neighbors umm… costume party and come home in time for our get together” When Sydney heard both boys in the bathroom saying they were going out, she knew they were up to something as usual. “Well, let me see your costumes.” She said suspiciously. The door opened slowly and Joe’s eyes showed a gleam off gilt. Their mothers face was horrified! “You think I am going to let my little twins go to a costume party in a mugger outfit? No way! Go put on your matching bunny one piece, everybody loves those!” Joe and Bob looked at each other before saying “But Mom, those hurt my feet. Don’t you think this looks pretty cool!? it’s not like we are actually going to steal stuff, we are just dressing up for fun.” Sydney responded with a very logical question, “Why is there a costume party in July?” Bob and Joe pushed their way outside as fast as they could before being forced to answer.

They walked down the street carrying two duffle bags, wearing all black, and not looking suspicious at all. They walked up the sidewalk to the building and Joe reached for the door handle. His hands where shaking, everything slowed down, the reflection of their masks in the glass made Joe’s back twitch with a sudden chill. “Why am I doing this?” he thought. It was too late now, but he was going to get a ton of awesome snacks! The door opened with a loud creak and they walked into a clean swept floor. “this is weird” thought Joe “ The gas station is filthy.”  Joe raised his hands in surrender, but obviously Bob didn’t see what he did, it was too late they were in for it now. Bob went on with his pitch not seeing clearly where he was, “You guys are being robbed nobody move or we will ugh… beat you up…” His voice trailed off as he realized that he was not in a gas station but rather the police station. The office cubicles started to boom with laughter. The biggest police officer stood up and walked over to the shaking boys. “Boys, do you know where you are right now?” He said while laughing. Joe answered” umm…I don’t believe we are at the gas station. We should go… We were just testing to see if you guys were ready for anything!” The officer grabbed the boys not believing that fib. He was very amused “Well, you know what I have to do you. You will have to do public service to pay for this intended robbery.”

Joe and Bob had to clean all the streets of their neighborhood which took about two and a half weeks. Their party was a complete failure as the boys tried to convince their friends to help sweep streets.

At the end of all this their Mother talked to them, “Bob, Joe, God sees all things even through your lies. My Honeys, junk food and friends are obviously not worth a lie or hurting others. One of the 10 commandments clearly says that lying is a sin worthy of death. You boys are blesses that right now you have the opportunity to repent of your lies, to me and to your heavenly father!” Bod answered “You are right Mom, I need to really examine my life and repent, because Christ died for all of my sin and I need to make a change in my life. I am sorry mom.” “I forgive you Bob” Joe repeated word for word what Bob said and their mother forgave them as well as their heavenly father.  The lesson of this chapter of Bob and Joe’s life is clearly that, lying and stealing are sins that God see’s and are definitely not worth junk food.

Prickles ( update )

image image image image

Prickles is now 1 1/2 years old !!!!!he is about 12 inches long . It seems like only yesterday I went to buy him! He is ,in my opinion, more friendly than othe bearded dragons . Most bearded dragons like to be held and won’t bite and all that , but Prickles is all that and curious about things that happen outside his cage . He will chase flies and watch my siblings play!I’ve looked at pictures of prickles when he was a baby and I can’t believe how much he has grown !!!! At a point in his life I thought he wasn’t growing !! So I had to feed him extra crickets and more veggies!! I think it did the trick because prickles is huge now !!

One thing I do with prickles is watch his weight. A lot of bearded dragons are FAT so ever since I got him I’ve been feeding just the right amount of food not too much and not too little .The worst thing you can have is a FAT lizard ! You might be wondering “how does she know when he is full?”her is how I know !! When I try to feed him more food I hold it up to his face and he will close his eyes !!! It is soooo funny!  He mostly does that when I feed him broccoli!! I sometimes put berries and veggies .Prickles will pick out the berries and leave the veggies!!!

Prickles doesn’t do so very much during the day … All he does is sit on his log , move to a different log , eat , swim in his water , then go back to sitting on his log .  I often wounded what prickles thinks about all day !!!!

I think he had a pretty happy life thought . Crickets falling from the sky , food everyday he doesn’t have to hunt for , a pool ! I mean what more could he ask for !!!!

Gluten Free Oatmeal Cookies

This looks like a oatmeal cookiesgreat recipe ! Iwant to make it for my family because my family is mostly gluten free .

16 ounces old fashioned rolled oats

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/8 teaspoon kosher salt

10 ounces unsalted butter, room temperature
6 ounces dark brown sugar
3 1/2 ounces granulated sugar
2 large eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1/2 a cup of raisins (optional)
Heat the oven to 375 degrees F. Spread oats in a single layer on half-sheet pans and bake until lightly toasted, about 20 minutes. Remove the oats from the oven and let cool for 2 to 3 minutes.

Grind 8 ounces of the toasted oats in a food processor for 3 minutes or until the consistency of whole-wheat flour. Add the baking powder, cinnamon and salt and pulse to combine.

Combine the butter, brown sugar and granulated sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer, and mix on medium speed until light in color, about 3 minutes. Stop once to scrape down the sides of the bowl. Reduce the mixer speed to the lowest speed, add the egg and vanilla and mix to combine. Stop to scrape down the sides of the bowl, if necessary.

With the mixer on the lowest speed, slowly add the oat mixture, the remaining 8 ounces of oats and the raisins until just combined. Stop once to scrape down the sides of the bowl. Scoop the dough with a 1-ounce ice cream scoop or disher onto parchment-lined half-sheet pans, leaving 2 inches between each mound. Bake the cookies for 12 minutes, rotating the pans after 6 minutes, until the cookies begin to brown around the edges. Remove the pans from the oven and let the cookies cool on the pans for 2 minutes. Transfer the cookies to a cooling rack to cool completely.
